Building Blocks for Beginners

This is a set of 6 classes designed for beginners as well as those who want to brush up on their quilting skills. The classes, spread over a 3-month period are scheduled for the second and fourth Saturdays of February, March, and April. Each session highlights specific skills.

  • Students are encouraged to make use of the new sewing machines we now have in our classroom.
  • Each student is required to have their own copy of "You Can Quilt" by Garduna & Oddie - it is one of the best textbooks that I've seen for beginning quilters and is available at a discount for those who register for the classes.
  • The practice blocks are designed to be scrappy. We will have fabrics that students can choose from for the blocks they make in class.  (These fabrics are included in the cost of the classes.)

Skill Builder Set 1: Learning the Basics.  The first session focuses on the essentials of cutting; sewing accurate 1/4 inch seams; and pressing. The following blocks are constructed during class:

  • Rail Fence - a simple, yet striking block that is perfect for practicing cutting strips of fabric and sewing 1/4" seams accurately.
  • Log Cabin - one of the oldest and most beloved patchwork blocks. In a traditional log cabin block, the center square represents the hearth of the home. The light-colored logs are the sun shining on the log walls and the dark logs are the shadows. This block provides practice for cutting strips of different lengths and maintaining a 1/4" seam as you build the block.
  • Value Nine-Patch - this block is popular, versatile, and excellent for learning how the placement of different color values can create a secondary pattern. (Without the differences in value, this block would simply be a 36-Patch block!)
