Red/Pink Tulip (Month 5)

The Sew-Along for creating the Shenandoah Valley Botanical Album Quilt continues with the Red/Pink Tulip block. Each month, Doreen Johnson and Dawn Ronningen present a block from Esther Blair Matthew's original quilt made in 1858. (There are 25 blocks in the quilt, but only 22 different designs as several are repeated.) The goal of this Sew-Along, which is free, is to introduce the world to Esther Blair Matthews and her legacy quilt and to share helpful tips, techniques, and fascinating historical narratives about each botanical block. All skill levels and styles of applique are welcome and encouraged! Click here to learn more about the Sew-Along.

To participate in this Sew-Along:

1. Purchase the 'Shenandoah Valley Botanical Album' quilt pattern. The pattern is available exclusively from the Virginia Quilt Museum and can be ordered here.

2. Determine the size you want to make. You have 3 options:
    … 9” blocks for a 45” x 45” quilt;
    …16” blocks for an 80” x 80” quilt;
    …or 20” blocks for a 100” x 100” quilt
    You could also add borders to increase the size.

3. Decide on your background. You could use the same fabric for each block or use a selection of neutrals.

4. Pick your appliqué fabrics. You can interpret this quilt in many different ways - it's your choice! We are offering three different groups of fabrics: Reproduction - featuring Barbara Brackman's latest designs; Traditional  - featuring selections from Jan Patek's 'Lilies of the Field' and 'Castlewood' collections from Moda; and Batiks - featuring Hoffman's modern Me+You Indah designs and coordinating solids.
